The Parlor Piece: Black Upright Piano Ornament

The upright piano — also called a vertical piano — has been the anchor of living rooms, school music halls, and honky-tonk saloons since the early 19th century. John Isaac Hawkins is credited with patenting one of the earliest true upright designs in 1800, and the form quickly democratized music in a way the grand piano never could: uprights were compact enough for ordinary homes and affordable enough for ordinary families. By the Victorian era, having one in the parlor was practically a social requirement. Countless composers, from Scott Joplin to Jerry Lee Lewis, got their start hammering away on one of these sturdy, gloriously unpretentious instruments.

This miniature captures the classic upright in its most beloved form — a broad, boxy silhouette finished in a deep, glossy black lacquer that looks as serious and elegant as a concert hall Steinway. The keyboard is faithfully rendered with alternating black and white keys, a tiny sheet of music sits on the music desk, and three gold-toned pedals gleam along the base. The lid is propped open at the top with a gentle curve — a detail that makes the whole thing feel genuinely alive, as if someone just stepped away mid-song. Two graceful candlestick-style holders flank the music desk, a charming nod to the days before electric lights lit the keys.

Whether it belongs on the tree of a lifelong pianist, a music teacher's classroom, or anyone who grew up being told to practice their scales, this little upright is a love letter to one of the most enduring instruments ever built.

A must read for every black person
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
I thought the book was very powerful and in depth! I wanted the biggest version of the book! Nevertheless I found this book very in depth and informative! We must learn from our forefathers and understand or try to imagine what they went through! We can do this today now in 2024! We must unite and teach our children this rich history of us building and supporting each other as black peoples!

The sadness of the massacre
Format: Paperback
I am not sure how I came across this book but am glad I did. This is one reason why we should never try to erase our history whether good or bad. Sadly, I feel the hate still lingers amongst people but I will never forget when Dr Martin Luther King was assasinated. I was just 19 and my heart sank to lose such a good leader. This book opened my eyes to look and support our leaders whether white or black. Skin color does not define who we are
